Canopy Spread Calculator

Calculate a tree's canopy (crown) area from its average canopy radius, measured from the trunk to the dripline. Canopy area is used to estimate amenity value, shading, and green-cover contribution.

Canopy area (m²) = π × radius(m)²

How canopy area is calculated

Canopy area equals π multiplied by the average canopy radius squared, treating the crown as a circle in plan view. For irregular canopies, average two or more radius measurements taken at right angles for a more representative figure.

Where it's used

Canopy area is frequently recorded in a Tree Inventory and used by councils to estimate urban canopy cover and green-infrastructure targets across a site or local government area.
