DSH / Circumference Converter

Convert between Diameter at Standard Height (DSH) and trunk circumference, useful when a tape measure only gives you circumference in the field but your report needs DSH for the NRZ calculation.

Convert trunk measurements

Measured at 1.4 m above ground (formerly DBH)
Circumference (cm) = DSH (cm) × π

Cross-section

50.0 cm diameter

Circumference: 157.1 cm

The conversion

Circumference equals diameter multiplied by π. Measuring circumference with a diameter tape at 1.4 m above ground (standard height) is often faster and more accurate in the field than trying to measure diameter directly, especially on irregular trunks.

DSH replaces DBH

AS 4970:2025 renamed diameter at breast height (DBH) to Diameter at Standard Height (DSH). The measuring point is unchanged at 1.4 m, so existing DBH figures can be used as DSH. DSH is the input for the NRZ & TPZ Calculator and Basal Area Calculator. The Structural Root Zone uses a different measurement — the Diameter Above Root Buttress (DARB).
